PTSD Treatment in Raleigh, NC

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms may affect sleep, mood, relationships, concentration, and day-to-day functioning. At Abdul Khalid, MD, PA, I provide individualized psychiatric evaluation and medication management for adults experiencing PTSD and trauma-related symptoms in Raleigh and throughout North Carolina.

Understanding PTSD

PTSD is more than feeling distressed after a difficult experience. For some people, trauma-related symptoms persist and begin to interfere with daily life. Symptoms may develop soon after a traumatic event or become more noticeable over time.

PTSD can occur following many types of traumatic experiences, and each person may experience it differently. A careful psychiatric evaluation can help clarify symptoms, identify co-occurring conditions, and determine an appropriate treatment approach.

Common Symptoms of PTSD

PTSD symptoms may include:

  • Intrusive or unwanted memories of a traumatic event
  • Flashbacks or nightmares
  • Avoidance of people, places, thoughts, or situations associated with the trauma
  • Feeling constantly alert, tense, or on guard – Irritability or increased anxiety
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating – Emotional numbness or feeling disconnected from others
  • Negative changes in mood or thinking – Difficulty functioning at work, at home, or in relationships

Symptoms and their severity vary from person to person. PTSD may also occur alongside depression, anxiety, substance use, or other mental health concerns.

How Is PTSD Treated?

My approach begins with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to better understand your symptoms, trauma history, current functioning, previous treatment, and treatment goals.

When medication is appropriate, we will discuss potential benefits, risks, side effects, and alternatives. Treatment is monitored over time and adjusted based on response, tolerability, and changes in symptoms.

When trauma-focused psychotherapy would be beneficial, I may recommend working with a therapist experienced in evidence-based PTSD treatment as part of a coordinated treatment plan.

Medication Management for PTSD

Medication can be helpful for some people with PTSD, but treatment is not the same for everyone. Medication decisions are made individually after reviewing symptoms, other psychiatric or medical conditions, current medications, previous treatment response, and potential side effects.

Follow-up appointments allow us to evaluate how treatment is working and determine whether adjustments are needed.
