Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Psychiatrist Raleigh NC

Bipolar disorder can cause significant changes in mood, energy, sleep, activity levels, and daily functioning. At Abdul Khalid, MD, P.A., I provide individualized psychiatric evaluation and medication management for adults with bipolar disorder in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Because symptoms of bipolar disorder can sometimes overlap with depression, ADHD, anxiety, substance-related conditions, and other psychiatric disorders, treatment begins with a careful evaluation of symptoms, psychiatric and medical history, previous treatment, and patterns of mood changes over time. The goal is to establish an accurate diagnosis and develop an individualized treatment plan focused on mood stability, symptom improvement, and overall functioning.

Bipolar Disorder Symptoms

Bipolar disorder involves changes in mood, energy, activity, and functioning that occur in distinct episodes. Symptoms and their severity can vary considerably from one person to another.

During manic or hypomanic episodes, symptoms may include unusually elevated or irritable mood, increased energy or activity, decreased need for sleep, rapid speech, racing thoughts, distractibility, impulsive behavior, and poor judgment.

Depressive episodes may include persistent sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, low energy, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep or appetite, feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness, and thoughts of death or suicide.

Because some of these symptoms can occur with other mental health conditions, a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation is important when bipolar disorder is suspected.

Bipolar Disorder Treatment

Treatment for bipolar disorder is individualized based on the type and severity of symptoms, patterns of mood episodes, medical and psychiatric history, previous treatment response, and personal treatment goals.

Treatment may include medication management, psychotherapy, or a combination of approaches. The goals of treatment are to stabilize mood, reduce the frequency and severity of mood episodes, improve daily functioning, and support long-term stability.

Regular follow-up is important for monitoring changes in mood, sleep, functioning, medication effectiveness, and potential side effects.

Our Approach to Bipolar Disorder Treatment

My approach begins with a careful evaluation of your current symptoms, patterns of mood changes, sleep, medical and psychiatric history, previous treatment response, and treatment goals.

Treatment is individualized and collaborative. When medication is appropriate, we will discuss potential benefits, risks, side effects, and alternatives. Treatment is monitored over time and adjusted when needed, with the goal of improving mood stability, daily functioning, and overall quality of life.

Medication Management for Bipolar Disorder

Medication management is an important part of treatment for many adults with bipolar disorder. Medication selection depends on the type of bipolar disorder, current symptoms, previous treatment response, medical history, other medications, and potential side effects.

Treatment may include mood stabilizers, certain atypical antipsychotic medications, or other medications when clinically appropriate. Follow-up appointments are used to monitor mood and sleep patterns, medication effectiveness, side effects, and overall functioning.

The goal is to find an effective and well-tolerated medication approach that supports mood stability and reduces the risk of future mood episodes.
