Initial Psychiatric Evaluations

A healthy brain is not everything in just the same way as a healthy body is not everything. For one to have a fully functioning and healthy brain requires one to also have a healthy state of mind. The brain is a physical organ that controls all the nerves that tell the body what to do, what is going on, what time it is, what we see, what we smell, which way to go, what we hear, what we touch and many more. But does it mean that when a person has a healthy brain, he is mentally sound? No. Our emotions and the way we behave are partially governed by the subconscious. In a lot of cases, a person can have a fully functioning brain but is mentally unsound.

A person can be considered mentally sound when his actions are rational. I may even interchange the word “normal” in place of rational. Normal is a relative term, normal can mean differently for one person to another; true. But we can easily distinguish actions which are not normal in certain instances. An example is unnecessary violence or having anger issues. When you resort to physical assault against someone for a minor issue, say for example when someone accidentally steps on your foot, something which could have been resolved in a more humane manner, this is not a normal reaction on your part. When this becomes somewhat of a habit, then this is a symptom of being mentally unstable.

Committing murder or even thinking about committing murder is a manifestation of mental incapacity. Another example is thoughts of committing suicide. Suicide never solves a problem, but only adds to it most especially on the part of the people you leave behind. The mere thought of ending your life is a sign of mental instability. Any action for that matter, which is far beyond how normal people of sound mind would react to certain stressful situations indicate signs of mental problems. In some severe cases even, the mind begins to act strange in an uncontrolled manner. One might start to hallucinate, or see images or scenes that are not really there, or become disoriented in time and space, or starts to see people who are not really there, or hear things that are not really there to make such sound, or sleepwalk, or have extreme tendencies to forget things or even people, then these are also definitely signs of a deteriorating mental state.

If you happen to encounter even a hint of the situations mentioned above such as the consideration of committing murder, easily resorting to habitual physical and unnecessary violence, or suicidal thoughts, or strange and uncontrolled phenomena, then you have to see someone as soon as you possibly can.
